BLOG TRADISIONAL INDOOR AND OUTDOOR GAMES
ASSALAMUALAIKUM...
Hey guys, this is my first time writing a blog and actually, this is for my diploma project. My groupmates choose the topic of Games so we have to describe various games. I choose traditional Indoor and Outdoor games. So, let's get started!
You all know that we have a lot of games nowadays, not including games using gadgets. Examples of popular games today are ML, PUBG, Genshin Impact, and so on. Well, I also play these games. Because of that, traditional games are increasingly had been forgotten by children, teenagers, let's alone adults. Let me remind you that the Malaysian traditional games are divided into two types ie porch games and games in the backyard. Porch play is when children play in front of their house in a while yard play is a spacious play area. So today I want to tell you some of the traditional indoor and outdoor games that I know of.
Beginning with traditional indoor games. Firstly, it is called Congkak derived from the verse Congak which means mental calculation. It is called mental calculation because when we play we have to count the holes when inserting the marbles into it. This is a popular game in our country played by local people or even the Peranakan India and Baba Melaka. It is also have been played in Indonesia and the Philippines. In Congkak, there are two types of material, namely Congkak board and marble. Congkak boards are sampan-shaped and can be made of various types of wood with seven holes in a row known as ‘villages’ and at both ends. There are mother holes are known as ‘house’.
And they are also made from plastics which are lighter than woods. Plastic Congkak board can be easily be found in any mall or stationery shop. So now I will tell you how to play this game.
Two players sit facing each other facing the Congkak board, the opposing member will start first and insert the fruit one by one in the village hole up to the village chief's hole. The movement continues until the last fruit on the hand is inserted into the opponent member's village. If the fruit falls in the village itself. The player can shoot the opponent's village which is the same as his village, that is, harvest all the fruit. Opponents take turns continuing the game until the fruit dies. After that, it was his opponent's turn to move his fruit until he lost. If there is no fruit in the player's village turn to move the fruit will move to the opponent. When you had finished the first-round game, each player refills the village with marbles and if there is a village that does not have enough fruit, it is considered ‘burned’. If the hole is filled with the opponent's marble, the marble will be taken to their opponent's storehouse. At the end of the game, the marbles are counted from the head of each house. The winner is the one with the most marbles. The benefit of this game is they will learn to count holes before inserting a marble also strengthens your motor skills as you grip the marbles. Next, is Selambut or more specifically Batu Seremban. The game is usually had played by girls in 2 to 5 people. This game only requires 5 pieces. Often in ancient times, they used small rocks or rubber seeds. In addition, there are also the fruits sewn with cloth and filled with green beans, sand, or sago seeds. This game is often played when leisure, and can be played anywhere there is a flat and clean surface. The advantage of playing Seremban stone is that it sharpens the skill of the player's eyes and hands to catch the fruit he throws and at the same time collect the fruit on the floor.
So, the rules of the game are easy. How to play this game is to toss and catch all the fruits without any being dropped. The Seremban stone game has many levels. For example, all the fruit should be scattered and should not be touched. From the first level to the fourth level, players will toss fruits while a fruit on the floor will be collected. This process is repeated. Only the difference between this process is to throw 2 - 4 to each level. However, in the fifth level, the player will toss all the pieces and catch them without missing anything. This tutorial video will help you how to play this game.

Thirdly, is the checkers. You can move your fruit and jump on the opponent's fruit. This game is one of my favorites after Congkak and of course, the rules of playing checkers are simple because I think most of you know right, but I give a little explanation of the rules so you can remember them back. This game uses only two players. Both players will have different fruit colors (black/red). They take turns running their fruit. Fruits can only move from one compartment to another. When a player jumps on an opponent's piece, he or she will pick up the piece. The advantage of playing checkers is that we will be wise to make strategies to defeat the opponent.

Now we move on to traditional outdoor games as well. The first is Ketingting or Teng Teng and as we all know, Teng Teng is a game that has been popular since time immemorial. Until now, children still play in school. Teng Teng also will give benefits to children, for example, it can strengthen muscles as they need to control and balance their body when they jump boxes one by one. There are no rules for the number of players. To make Teng Teng, you just need to use chalk and Gandu (small rock). Draw each box on the tar floor using chalk, sometimes they draw numbers in it 1 to 9. You just have to throw the Gandu until it gets into one box and starts to jumping without stepping on the box that has the Gandu. After that, you need to turn back and do the same thing and take the Gandu. You have to finish all the boxes. But if the Gandu does not enter the box or is on the line of the box, it means you lose as well. The winner has a lot of boxes. This video will help you learn how to play this game.

The second is Sepak Takraw or Kick Volleyball. The ball is made of rattan. Boys do play this thing a lot but few women also play. My father plays this game as well. This sport only allowing players to kick the ball using their legs, knees, and head. The sport has many competitions and it's had been played in southeast Asia widely. The game is between two teams and had been composed of three players. Benefits playing this sport makes our body healthy and flexible, courage us to work in teamwork.

Thirdly, is Slipper stacking game is a kind of traditional Malaysian children's game. Three slippers are needed for this game the slippers are arranged on three sides and one slipper will be thrown to drop the three slippers. The game has no number of players and the only tools needed are slippers.
The game requires 2 groups and each player in the group can make 3 throws but if they fail the opponent will take over. If the slipper is successfully dropped, then the first group that wins has to kill their opponent by throwing the slipper and aiming at the opponent. If the first group can rearrange back the three slippers into 3 sides they will win.
The benefit in this game is it will strengthen our hearts while avoiding being hit by a throw from the opponent. Our leg muscles will also become stronger as this involves running and jumping. And lastly, We can be wise to measure the strategy, for example, they measure the distance before throwing the slipper. In conclusion, we can keep this traditional game to be remembered by the younger generation.
